A Video on Making Simple Cups

making a simple pottery cup Lucy Fagella

I made a little video the other day on how I throw these little cups off of a hump of clay.

Centering a small piece of clay from the larger lump of clay makes the process go a little faster when throwing clay that is a pound or less.

I want these cups to have loose gestural lines that show the movement, fluidity and the softness of the clay.

Each cup is a little different, with different marks and textures. They are made quickly so I don't feel they are too precious to have some fun with glaze experimentation.

Winter is here in western Massachusetts - it’s been snowy, rainy, icy, the perfect time to stay in the warm studio and do a little experimenting and glaze testing during the quiet month of January. These small cups will set the stage for some new glaze combinations!

Before you know it I will be making pottery for the 16th annual Asparagus Valley Pottery Trail on April 25th and 26th. Save the date if you want come on the tour this year!
